This past summer I had the privilege of visiting Eritrea. The land of Palm trees, cactus fruits, gorgeous beaches, and a place where the camels roam free.
One of the first things I noticed when I first landed in Asmara was how beautiful the country is.The palm trees are everywhere, the scenery sights took my breath away everywhere I turned. Colors popping from every corner with fabrics so fine to the touch as if meant for only royalty. Music, radio and TV playing everywhere I went. The smell of the coffee and the taste the sweet honey, also known as mes, hypnotized me. By the time I left, Eritrea had seduced all my senses.
Where I went
I was able to visit Asmara, Keren, and Masawa. Keren was a short trip but exhilarating trip that included a 2 AM race around the city and me really wanting to own a farm. The port city of Massawa is underrated and hands down a must see! The Red Sea fuels Massawa’s economy and has the best fish in all of Eritrea. Take a dip in the Red Sea , you’ll find the salty warm waters to charm you into staying just another hour, and then another, and another.
The downtown scene is full with things to do. There are restaurants and just as many shops as there are people. The yellow cars zip by as people leave on taxis. You can get around the city by renting a car, bike, or even using the cheap public transportation. It's easy to obtain a temporary license as a foreigner on vacation in Eritrea, so that's another option to get around for people comfortable enough to drive themselves in a foreign country. I think transportation is the hardest part, but once you find ways to move around you can really enjoy your vacation better.
My Hit List aka things to do:
Cinema Impero
Mariam Cathedral
Adi Halo Dam
Intercontinental Hotel
Majah majah - Fountain
Gelato Italiano- try the Mango gelato! Thank me later!
Bar Daina
Zara
Iaba Bar & Nigh Club
I can honestly say Eritrea stole my heart at first sight and I’m sure it’ll steal yours. It has so much more to offer than your think. Get past the fact that it doesn’t have most things up to date, and you’ll have a blast. The locals are very friendly and amazing so it's not hard to make new friends or go on adventures.
