Kaifeng served for many years as the capital to the North Song Dynasty and it is one of the 6 ancients Capitals of China. Keep in mind this city has been rebuilt numerous time so history is intertwined with modern culture. Still, you will be able to see many ancient buildings and sceneries.
Compared to the other Capitals of China, it may seem like there isn't much to see nor to do in Kaifeng, but if you know a little bit of its history it can be interesting. For me, it was much easier to understand more about the song dynasty and Kaifeng by simply watching The Song Dynasty show.
Kaifeng Song Dynasty Show -大宋东京梦华
This is a huge Chinese reality outdoor performance performed by over 700 actors This performance is called "Dà sòng dōngjīng mèng huá -大宋东京梦华" but it is known as The Famous Kaifeng Song Dynasty Show. It is performed in the Millennium City Park in Kaifeng and it is also one of the most famous performances/shows in China. This show is the best way to get an insight as well as learn more about the Northern song Dynasty history, culture, and etc.

September is the best time to visit Kaifeng since the weather is pleasant and it isn't crowded.
How to get to Kaifeng
By Air
The nearest airport is Zhengzhou's airport which is roughly 45 miles away from Kaifeng. Which means you will need to find other transportation methods to get to Kaifeng from Zhengzhou.
Trains
You can take a railway train from Zhengzhou and other cities to get to Kaifeng.

Kaifeng's travel bus station is near the train Station. Travel Buses come and go from Zhengzhou and most cities.
Getting around Kaifeng
Taxi
Be careful of taxi scammers. Make sure the meter starts at CNY5 because you are a foreigner they will try to overcharge you. It should only be CNY1 for every additional kilometer.
Bengbeng
A bengbeng is similar to a tuk-tuk and just like taxi drivers, a bengbeng driver will try to scam you. From the train station to most scenic spots should only cost you between CNY3 to CNY6. But since they hike up the prices when it comes tourists, the most you should pay for a bengbeng is CNY10.
Bus
If you are looking for the cheapest option, take the public bus. The bus fare is only CNY1.
Bus #20 is a tourist bus that goes to most scenic spot.
